Expert Evaluation of Abnormalities in the Mouth, Face, and Neck

Your mouth plays a critical role in your overall health—and it can also serve as an early warning system for serious conditions, including oral cancer. At Third Coast Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (Third Coast OMS), our board-certified oral surgeons specialize in identifying and diagnosing oral and maxillofacial pathology, including abnormal growths, lesions, and other changes in the mouth, face, and jaw.

Early detection and diagnosis are key to successful treatment, and we’re here to guide you through the process with expert care and compassion.

What Is Oral Pathology?

Oral pathology refers to any disease or abnormal condition affecting the tissues in and around the mouth, including the:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Tongue
  • Palate (roof of the mouth)
  • Gums
  • Salivary glands
  • Jawbone and facial structures
  • Throat and tonsils

The lining inside your mouth (oral mucosa) is normally smooth and coral pink. Any changes in color, texture, or function should be evaluated—especially if they persist or worsen.

Types of Oral Pathology We Diagnose

Our surgeons are trained to identify and manage a wide range of oral and maxillofacial conditions, including:

  • Benign tumors and cysts of the jaw, salivary glands, and oral soft tissues
  • Oral cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma
  • Mucoceles, ranulas, and other salivary gland disorders
  • Bone lesions, including fibro-osseous lesions or odontogenic cysts
  • Lichen planus, pemphigus, and other autoimmune disorders
  • Fungal infections or chronic ulcerations

Warning Signs of Oral Pathology

Not all oral abnormalities are cancerous—but any unusual or persistent symptom should be checked by a specialist. Common signs that may indicate a pathological condition include:

  • Red or white patches inside the mouth (erythroplakia or leukoplakia)
  • A sore that doesn’t heal or bleeds easily
  • A lump, bump, or thickened area in the soft tissues of the mouth
  • Chronic hoarseness, sore throat, or trouble swallowing
  • Unexplained facial or oral pain
  • Swelling in the jaw, face, or neck

These symptoms may be associated with a variety of conditions—including benign (non-cancerous) growths, infections, autoimmune disorders, or oral cancerPain is not always present. In fact, oral cancer often develops without pain, making routine self-checks and professional evaluations even more important.

Oral Cancer Screening & Biopsy

If you or your dentist has noticed a suspicious lesion or change in your mouth, our surgeons may recommend a biopsy—a minor surgical procedure where a small tissue sample is collected and sent to a pathology lab for diagnosis.

We provide:

  • Thorough visual and tactile exams
  • Advanced imaging, if needed
  • Surgical biopsy of soft or hard tissue lesions
  • Coordination with your referring dentist or physician

If a diagnosis is made, we will walk you through your next steps and, if necessary, collaborate with other specialists to coordinate your care.

Perform Monthly Self-Exams

We recommend that all adults perform a monthly oral cancer self-exam at home. Using a mirror and good lighting, check your:

  • Lips (inside and out)
  • Cheeks
  • Tongue (top, bottom, and sides)
  • Gums
  • Roof of the mouth
  • Throat and tonsils

If you notice any abnormal spots, swelling, or sores that last longer than 10–14 days, schedule an evaluation with our team right away.
